FAQ

Sports dentistry is a branch of dentistry focusing on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of oral injuries and conditions tied to sports participation. We craft custom mouthguards, monitor oral health in athletes, and offer emergency dental care for trauma. Our goal is to protect your smile and support peak performance whether you’re playing youth leagues or adult recreational sports.

We take an impression of your teeth to create a fully customized mouthguard that fits snugly and securely. It’s made to the correct thickness with durable materials, protects gum tissue and jaw support, won’t fall out mid‑action, and makes breathing or speaking easier. Over‑the‑counter boil‑and‑bite options are less protective, less comfortable, and may dislodge during play.

Act fast:

  1. Retrieve the tooth and hold it by the crown (not the root).
  2. Rinse gently if dirty—don’t scrub.
  3. Place it in milk, saline, or the patient’s saliva until you reach us.
  4. For fractures, rinse the area and apply a cold compress to reduce swelling.
  5. Seek care immediately so we can assess the damage and attempt to save or restore the tooth.

We recommend mouthguards for all children and youth engaged in any organized sport. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry supports use even in non-contact sports, because accidents can still happen, and the front teeth are especially vulnerable.

Yes—we also screen for oral conditions common in athletes such as tooth decay, gum disease, dental erosion from sports drinks, and even TMJ strain during training. We provide guidance on oral hygiene, diet, and how to manage dry mouth or acid exposure often seen in swimmers or high-endurance sports participants.

While a professionally fitted mouthguard may cost a few hundred dollars initially, avoidable consequences—like a knocked‑out tooth or fractured tooth—can cost $5,000–$20,000 in implants, root canals, or restorative work. A custom guard is widely recognized as far more economical in the long run.
